Mesoscale Eddy Kinetic Energy Budgets and Transfers between Vertical Modes in the Agulhas Current

چکیده

Abstract Western boundary currents are hotspots of mesoscale variability and eddy–topography interactions, which channel energy toward smaller scales eventually down to dissipation. Here, we assess the main eddies sinks in Agulhas Current region from a regional numerical simulation. We derive an eddy kinetic ( ) budget framework vertical modes. It accounts for transfers between reservoirs modes, including channeled by topography. The is dominated (barotropic first baroclinic modes) path intense mean currents. Eddy–topography interactions result major sink, along three different routes, with comparable importance: bottom-intensified time-mean currents, generation higher bottom friction. modes takes forms Northern Current, where it corresponds nonlinear on slope, Southern (linear) internal gravity waves over Away shelf, gain inverse turbulent cascade. However, remains net source due strong eddies, modulated topography, especially Current. shows that local dominates budget, contrary paradigm decay upon western boundaries.

A North Atlantic deep-water eddy in the Agulhas Current system

One hundred and twelve stations of CTDO2 and LADCP were collected in the Agulhas Current system as part of the Agulhas Undercurrent experiment (AUCE) in March 2003. Along an offshore section, at approximately 35.61S and 27.31E to the northwest of the tip of the Agulhas Plateau, an unusual feature was revealed between 2200 and 3500m depth, imbedded in the northward moving NADW layer. An anomalou...

Decoupling of the Agulhas Leakage from the Agulhas Current

The relationship between theAgulhas Current and theAgulhas leakage is not well understood. Here, this is investigated using two basin-scale and two global ocean models of incrementally increasing resolution. The response of the Agulhas Current is evaluated under a series of sensitivity experiments, in which idealized anomalies, designed to geometrically modulate zonal trade wind stress, are app...

Use of Turbulent Kinetic Energy and Scalar Variance Budgets to Obtain Directly Eddy Viscosity and Diffusivity from AUV Turbulence Measurements

In this manuscript we examine whether measurements obtained from an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with standard microstructure and fine structure sensors can be used to close the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) and Temperature Variance TV (heat) budgets. Classical turbulence theory is used to estimate the dissipation rate, ε, and the rate of change of the variance of temperature, ...
